Railroads began moving woodchips from mills to customers in the early to mid 1950's.  Initially gondolas or boxcars were used to move the product but as the traffic increased, railroads sought a larger, more efficient car to handle these lightweight loads.

First produced in the late 1950's specifically to haul wood chips, these new cars were longer and taller than the previous cars used and featured doors on the end for ease of unloading.  This new design allowed for a greater quantity of chips hauled per load, improving efficiency and increasing revenues.  While many factors in the lumber, paper and cardboard industries led to a decline in rail shipments from the 1970's on, these cars can still be found in service throughout North America doing exactly what they were designed to do, haul woodchips from the lumber plants to end users.
