Developed in the early 1960's to handle dry, granular cargo such as grain, sand, and chemicals, cylindrical covered hoppers grew in popularity, size, and style through the 1980's.  Wearing a wide variety of paint schemes, these cars  can still be seen throughout North America in all types of service.  Cylindrical covered hoppers continue to be a widely used means to transport a large variety of materials, mostly commonly grain products from the grain producing regions of the U.S. and Canada to markets throughout the country.
